In a mirror of destinations, all there'd be is a blur of red
and yellow. An outline, a shape of some interesting piece
of a metallic quilt of liquid gold. Libeating, powder tassles.
It wasn't as awkward as I expected. I was feeding the kids when "Edward" arrived, spiffed up as usual. He had with him a bottle of red wine, and a newspaper. Thought I'd bring the juice and the conversation, he laughed. He sat down next to Gabe. How've you been, eh? he asked him, and my little boy smiled. Yeah, Gabe answered and continued eating. "Edward" smiled up at me. Quite the lingusts, they are, he teased. At least they're not as talkative as Paige over there, Rev came in and "Edward" stood up. They shook hands. Harry came in. "Edward!" he seemed genuinely glad to see him. They shook hands and patted shoulders.
The children went to bed and I turned on music. Rev and I danced while "Edward" and Harry, both holding their second glass of wine, leaned against the wall inside and had a serious conversation about medicine. I tried not to pay attention to them, but twirled around with Rev, my long hippie skirt swirling my calves. Aren't you tired? Rev asked, and he dipped me. I would be, I answered. If only this dinner were over. Rev laughed. You get what you pay for, he said.
The three of us sat down to dinner. I'm sure my face was red from most of the wine I had been drinking. Harry has to work for three days staright starting Monday, I said, sulking. I'll be here with the children all day by myself. Yourself? Rev said, sarcastically. Don't even say things like that. I'll be over here the whole time. Harry looked askance at me. I didn't realize that that had been the wrong thing to say. He thought I was suggesting something....
I did my best to amend it.
Besides this one slip, we had good, long conversations and ate chicken marsala and salad and drank lemonade (the only other drink in the house besides milk and alcohol.) We planned a huge party for the summer, and laughed about things in entertainment news. We all looked at each other as if we'd be best friends for life. "Edward" and Harry looked at each other as if they didn't know how to assess the situation. When "Edward" went to leave, he caught me cleaning up in the kitchen. Wasn't so bad, eh? He said. No, I answered and smiled. If you want this to go on, he said, it will. Until you say stop, this will go on.
I won't say stop quite yet. I kissed his cheek as he went out the door, and he looked straight through me. Until you say stop....
Harry and I kiss will kiss the children, get into bed, I'll rest my head on his chest, and we'll sleep. I'll miss him next week. It's hard for him, being a resident. It's hard for us, him being a resident.
But I'll have my children, Rev, Trinity. And "Edward."
Save me.
