Thirtieth Entry

A laugh from up above in a calm, swinging branch.
"You'll never catch me Pigeon, you'll never find a way
up here." Thrown acorns, and I covered my forehead from below, smiling up at his
good-hearted playfulness.

James Reverend Jones, known as Rev, has not been getting enough attention in my entries. His broad, dimpled smile, his tousled brown hair, his large, hazel eyes. Sometimes they look chocolate in the dark, he says in his light accent, as he watches me write this. And, he says, don't forget to mention I'm single and wickedly sexy. He laughs and brushes his hair back with his hand. But as he sits back to watch television I'll tell you the truth-he's skinny. He's skinny with only a bit of muscle in his arms. Which I love to pinch like spaghetti. Now, none of that he laughs. I'm not that skinny, I'm just boyish. Quite boyish, I say. Boyish and fun add then, he rests his arm on the back of the sofa and lets his rough fingers hit my shoulder. And also add I have a daughter, do they know it?

They know it, I answer. Trinity, little shy, stately thing that she is. With an angular nose and Rev's eyes, she has inherited none of his outgoing spirit. She is reserved and quiet, small and frail like a new butterfly. Do you think she'll grow into that large head of hers? he laughs. He loves that girl more than anyone could know. Yes, I answer. Though you need to make her eat more so that she's not skinny like you, I tell him.

Rev was my first boyfriend. We used to ride bicycles together, and ditch Harry to kiss innocently in the school coat closet. We got into serious trouble together. We both got suspended for smoking cigarettes in detention, we both ran away from home for three weeks only to be caught Rev's mother, we both made the teachers laugh at our inappropriate jokes. Harry had to always protect us from getting in trouble. Rev and I realized early on we were not sexually compatible. We realized early on that I was in love with Harry. We realized early on that we were both failures at exactly the same things. Perhaps that is why he hates "Edward" so much. It is because he does not want my marriage to fail like his did.

Rev's wife was a horrible, snotty, bitch. When I first met her, she called me careless, reckless..why are those children being left to their own devices? They shouldn't be eating such fattening fruits like bananas....she told me once that I was much too old to be wearing the clothes that I do. I was younger at the time--she was an old hag since the day she was born. Rev liked her smile, he said, though I thought her lips too thin. He liked the way she called him James, which I thought was too formal. I liked her back then, he says to me now as I write this. But it was all a mistake, yeah? I ask. He laughs and tousles my hair. You're always right, Pidge. And this time was no different. She was, as you say, a horrible....snotty....bitch.

Charm bracelets and a sundial shaped like a clover,
written prophecies of God and man, of man and animal, of animal and God abound
in a place I recognize as home. In the gardens
of my childhood.
