We were tightly held between controversy and
adversary. And filthy chocolates.
Saturday morning, Louise and I woke up extremely early, went to the grocery store and bought as much food as we could possibly hold in the car. The whole time, we talked only of Chris and Tuck who were once so small that we could hold both of them at the same time. We bought streamers, Spongebob ones, with yellow balloons and two big cakes with vanilla frosting made into the shapes of Spongebob and Patrick. (Chris's favorite character is Patrick). Louise insisted that she buy all the decorations and food. We brought the groceries home, to find Reggie watching cartoons with the younger twins. He had one on each arm, and was laughing right along with them. Chris and Tuck, who were not allowed in the house, were over a neighbors' being watched and playing with her younger son. Oliver was in his room, playing with the twins's trucks, (being that they were not there to scold him.) and Ginny was sleeping in her seat next on the floor by the television.
Louise and I spent most of our day in the kitchen, cooking up a storm, and setting up decorations in the backyard. Louise asked me a couple of times about Harry and I, but when I didn't answer right away, she didn't push the issue. You still have those eyes, she said to me, I can tell that you aren't over him yet. I was shocked. Over Harry? Never. She laughed. Don't worry, Paige, she said. Just wait until all of this is over. I believed her.
At six o'clock, half an hour before the party, Harry showed up with two big, wrapped presents under each arm. What are those? I whispered to him as the twins ran to him. We can't afford much! He just smiled at me. Be patient, he told the twins, but I think he also meant it for me. At six-thirty, the neighbors and their children began to file into our backyard, dropping packages off on our kitchen table and complimenting Louise and I on the decorations. Harry grilled burgers and hot dogs on our stove and carried to the guests with crisps and lemonade. The twins were having a blast, as were the other children, and Reggie and little Virginia were inseperable until she fell asleep in his arms. Everything was smooth until more of Harry's friends came in to wish the twins' a happy sixth birthday.
Edward was with them. I see him about twice as much as my husband now, and I couldn't help but smile as he came in, looking suave and completely unassuming. Harry caught my eye and raised an eyebrow. Behave yourself, Paige, he said to me, and handed me the turner to flip the burgers. He went to greet his friends. Just as I imagined, Louise went directly to Edward and shook his hand with a smile. She always goes towards the handsome ones first. Edward sought me out with his eyes and smiled at me. He came over to where I was standing and said, "Hello, Paige. Let me take over for you." He took the flipper from me and began turning the burgers. Harry watched this interchange, and shook his head. He wiped his face with his hand, and left to go pick up Oliver who was whining. I brushed Edward's shoulder and left the kitchen. I was nervous about having everyone so close to me.
"I saw him, Paige." It was Louise. She took my hand, and whispered into my ear. "He's gorgeous." She shook her head. "But my son loves you. And I'm sure he deserves you more?" She patted my hand and left to help Edward in the kitchen. I went outside to find Harry. He was talking to a neighbor who lives a couple of houses down. Ah, and your lovely wife, he said to Harry and taking my hand. You've really outdone yourself, Paige, he said nicely.
She has, hasn't she? Harry said crossly.
Chris and Tuck opened their presents, and I, picking up the paper after them was so proud that they have turned out so well. They tore the paper off the small sports goals (basketball and football) Harry had bought them. They were going crazy over them. One day, they will make the perfect of husbands, I thought to myself. Like their father.
I love the way you wink at me from across the room
when I'm not even thinking wickedly about anything.
